The sacred marriage — the union of the masculine and feminine principles, the merging of opposites.
The latter, in European alchemy, takes the form of the “chemical wedding,” “royal marriage,” the union of brother and sister, the Sun and the Moon, Hermaphrodite and Salmacis, the male and female of various animals, etc.; in Indian alchemy, it appears as the union of Shiva and Shakti; in Chinese alchemy, as the joining of the dragon and the tiger or the meeting of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl (Heavenly Maiden).
In the Alexandrian, Arabic, and European alchemical traditions, the idea of death (usually in the form of a killing) and resurrection also plays an extremely important role.”
