In Judaism the Tree of Life symbolizes the Torah. When during the synagogue service it comes time to return the Torah to the Ark, those gathered recite lines from the Book of Proverbs of Solomon: ‘She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her’ (Prov. 3:18). The ends of the Torah scroll are attached to wooden rollers, which are called ‘etz chayim’ (‘tree of life’). The rollers are used for the convenience of rolling up and unrolling the scroll.
According to traditional Jewish interpretation, the Tree of Life is in the middle of paradise, and its shadow covers the entire garden. It exudes five hundred thousand different fragrances, and its sweet aroma reaches the edge of the world.
