The apocryphal text “Revelation of Abraham,” written independently of the Revelation of John near the end of the 1st century AD, describes the ascension of the patriarch Abraham into heaven, where he saw the fiery throne of God “and under the throne were four living creatures singing fire. And each of their eyes was four-faced. The appearance of their faces was: lions, men, bulls, eagles. Four heads, and each had four wings.” These creatures praised God like those in John’s Revelation, but unlike John’s depiction of four separate beings, here each creature has four faces, similar to the prophet Ezekiel’s vision.”
