Right now I’m in Los Angeles. And while I was driving around to different
states and was in different cities, I talked with many different people. And
the Americans really make a sympathetic impression on me. All of them are
aware, they feel everything, see everything, remember everything — all of them
are super-active and super-open. That is — no fog, no clutter in the head. It’s
wonderful. One older man says: “Want a cigar?” I say: “No.” He says: “Too bad.”
And he asks me what I do. He logged everything for himself, wrote it all down —
who I am, what I do — gave me his contacts and said he’s an investor. And that
he’ll think about who might be interested in promoting me as a writer in Los
Angeles. That’s how it all goes.
And from all sides, people are ready to work, to participate in everything, they
fully understand everything. There I am standing, for example, in some kind of
jacket or T-shirt, and people right away know what it is, they say: “Good choice,
well done.” But people don’t do this on autopilot, the way it might seem to
everyone — they really are aware. And I have talked with people quite a lot lately
about everything that’s happening in the world, and about the future, and the past,
and God. And I find it very pleasant to talk with them. And the feeling is — again,
after all, this is the system doing it. If it wanted me to have a negative impression
of the United States right now, it would have arranged things that way — it can
do that. But if it wants me, on the contrary, to leave with a good impression,
then it arranges things so that all the good stuff gets highlighted to me, drawn
to me. Even an overdose of good — seriously. An overdose of good. The feeling
is as if every other person I met — it’s as if I’m in different times, specifically in
age. That is — the men are all well-groomed, completely correct, all dressed in
my own clothes, you could say, with the same kind of haircuts, the same kind
of aware eyes. Both of my age, and those who are younger — and a sense of taste
about everything, an attitude about everything, manners about everything — and
especially this clarity. Just an unreal clarity.
The grandfather-investor I was talking with, who is over 70, was more aware
than all my employees, who are half his age, or even less. How can that be?
The grandfather with the cigar, before saying goodbye, listed everything
I had told him: “So — this many books written, since such-and-such year,
