And these old gods will arrive, and it will be decided precisely: whether they’ll
take away one-third of the people — on whose list are I, Big Alexander, and other
people — or leave them here. Or there’s the option that I can stay here to remake
things, or I can leave, fly off somewhere with them, or I can choose this role of the
white tsar. And I say to Big Alexander: “That is, there’s still a choice of option?”
He says: “Of course.” Again, one mustn’t take all of this literally. This is all the
sacred language — not physically, not directly, literally the way a person is now
prone to understand and picture it. This is all the sacred language, but there’s an
